Studying and working in Germany: what events to attend?

31.10.2024

In September 2022, the Fulda Education Fair opened its doors. This year’s fair brought together 130 exhibitors on 4,300 square metres of exhibition space. For companies and those looking for training, the fair was the perfect way to meet together.

Isn’t it great to visit a job exhibition?

For young people, it’s the best way to get personal contact and get an impression of companies and industries. For the first time, with a live stage, the fair brought together around 5,000 students and 30 schools, who were met by more than 150 companies from the region. The fair programme was also broadcast live.

The Primasteps team, under the auspices of the Kreisjobcenter, was entrusted with an important mission to inform and guide Ukrainians displaced to Germany into professional life.

Mariana Nemtsev and Alina Zak raised the following important topics during the presentation:

  • The dual education system
  • Characteristics of vocational training (Ausbildung)
  • Advantages of Ausbildung
  • The essence of Ausbildung professions
  • Ausbildung professions that are in demand in Germany
  • Deadlines for accepting documents
  • Search for an Ausbildung place
  • Writing a Bewerbung
  • Funding opportunities during your studies

Do you already know these terms?

No? Then let’s have a quick look at them

Moreover, the topic is relevant not only to the residents of Fulda, but also to everyone who wants to study and work in Germany.

Ausbildung is a dual vocational education in Germany. The main objective of this education is to prepare people for a specific profession. During the training, the student (Azubi) receives all the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge.

Azubis work at an enterprise and additionally attend a vocational school called Berufsschule.

Along with the dual system, there is also school-based Erstausbildung in such areas as healthcare, the Hauptausbildungsform. This school-based study option is complemented by various phases of internships at companies and universities. In this case, Azubi are not hired by just one company.

The Ausbildung diplomas that can be obtained at full-time vocational schools and health care schools include federally recognised professions in the field of “health care” (e.g. nursing, speech therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy). This type of training usually lasts 3 years. The vocational school is fully responsible for the training.

Also, the Ausbildung-speciality “Assistant” (e.g. “Technical Assistant”, “Trade Assistant”) is regulated at the level of the Land. The latter covers almost two years of school Ausbildung. School theory is complemented by practical training in a company. Ausbildung in the following areas can be completed on a part-time basis.

The apprenticeship or dual Ausbildung is the most popular/known type of Ausbildung in Germany. This type of Ausbildung is distinguished from the others by a harmonious combination of theory and practice. How does it work? A person works at a company that orders Ausbildung and additionally attends a vocational school – Berufsschule. It is this form of training that introduces you to and comprehensively prepares you for your work.

Requirements

You must have completed secondary school education before starting your vocational training.

General entry requirements:

Hauptschulabschluss 9th grade

Realschulabschluss 10th grade

Fachoberschule 12th grade

Abitur (Gymnasium) 13 grades with the first qualification

However, the majority of schoolchildren have completed 10 or 12 grades.

By the way, companies pay not only the cost of on-the-job training, but also the Ausbildungsvergütung (scholarship), the amount of which is regulated by a bilateral agreement.

The amount of the scholarship increases with each academic year and amounts to approximately 1/3 of the initial salary of a qualified specialist.

Companies usually set their own criteria for selecting students (Azubis). For example, it can be mathematical abilities, knowledge of foreign languages, or, for example, very specific skills that can be crucial for obtaining a place at the university.

In addition to the interview, the selection process may also include oral and written exams.

Advantages

– a specialist diploma of the highest German standard (recognised worldwide)

– as a specialist, good chances on the labour market and a stable job

– learning special professional vocabulary

– for foreigners – an opportunity to stay in Germany as long as possible, or a chance to return home with a German diploma

– independence from other financial sources

So where to start?

You need to start with the Bewerbung.

The Bewerbung is an integral part of the German admission process. You also write a Bewerbung when looking for a job for a specific position. It is with the help of the Bewerbung that German employers select candidates for employment and training. So what is this beast?

In Germany, the “Bewerbung” (here only for Ausbildung) consists of the following parts: a so-called cover letter, a CV, as well as diplomas, certificates, etc.

This is what your “Bewerbungsmappe” should look like:

– cover letter;

– cover page;

– CV

– school certificate;

– certificate from the place of internship;

– additional certificates, diplomas.
