Myths of staying in Germany

10.08.2023

We have published a similar article before. However, new myths grow like mushrooms after rain, so we decided to revisit this topic once again so that you are not misled by anything in Germany.

1. The labour office will pay me for finding a job

No, my friends, it will not. The labour office only pays you if you have no means of support. A job implies that you have a salary and means of subsistence, so the payment from the labour office stops. Of course, if your salary does not reach the subsistence level or is a mini-job, the employment centre will probably pay you extra. But there are no rewards for looking for a job.

2. The Migration Service will pay me for returning home for good

This is a 100% myth. You have the right to decide where you want to stay, so you can close Chapter 24 in Germany and return home or go to another country. No one will restrict this right, but you will not have to pay for it either.

3. I am a tax resident of Ukraine

In fact, this statement is quite ambiguous and everything is individual. Whose resident you are depends on various factors that connect you to Ukraine and Germany, for example:

  • Work
  • Real estate
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Other taxable activities

That is, if you own real estate in Ukraine, you are obliged to pay tax on it in Ukraine. At the same time, if you have a job in Germany, you pay taxes on your salary here. That is, you will be a tax resident of both countries.

If you have neither a job nor real estate in Ukraine, but you work in Germany and pay payroll tax, you are a tax resident of Germany.

But do not confuse a tax resident with a resident.

4. You do not need to learn German

This is a myth, friends. If you are planning to work in Germany and stay here, then you need to learn the language. Even if you are fluent in English, you still need to learn German, otherwise it will be much more difficult to find a job, especially a good one.

5. A migrant can only get the lowest paid job

Why should this be true if you have the qualifications, work experience and German language skills? Germany needs specialists and is willing to hire them at market wages. Of course, there are also low-paying jobs in Germany, but they are also filled by native Germans.
