Job in Germany: quick or long term?

If you want to find a job in Germany, there are two ways to go about it:

  • find a job quickly
  • to be employed for a long time

You might think that getting a job quickly is a bad thing. However, this is not the case at all.

For example, if you plan to stay in Germany for a few months and return home, or come back periodically for part-time work, then finding a job quickly is your option.

If you plan to stay in Germany for a long time or even immigrate permanently, then you should choose the second option - long-term employment. Everything is very individual.

What is the fastest way to get a job?

As a rule, these are professions where there is a significant shortage: builders, electricians, production operators, plumbers, drivers, handymen, cleaners and maids. Or seasonal workers in trade and gastronomy.

Where to get a long-term job?

As a rule, these are professions that require a high level of German language skills and confirmation of qualifications or even several years of study: doctors, nurses, IT specialists, engineers, economists-accountants, teachers, educators, and others.

How to get a job quickly?

There are several options here as well. The first option is to use the services of an intermediary, but there are risks:

1. A lot of scammers

You should be alerted if the company or person engaged in employment in Germany is geographically located outside the country.

2. Paid services

Also, you should not be charged any fees for employment. Such things are prohibited in Germany.

3. Too high a salary

The topic of salaries is a separate one. Salaries cannot be high without knowledge of German and the necessary qualifications. That is, you can expect an average of 1500-2000 euros per month, net.

In Germany, there are recruitment firms and agencies that employ foreigners. There is a difference between them.

A recruitment firm is looking for an employee for specific employers with whom it cooperates. In this case, you will sign a direct employment contract and work directly for the employer with whom you have concluded the contract.

The agency hires staff and sends them to work at different sites. In this case, you will sign an employment contract with the agency and work wherever it sends you.

This is allowed and can also be an option for quick employment, but the pay will usually be lower.

How to get a long-term job?

The whole process can be divided into several stages:

First, you need to learn German to B1 level, pass an exam and get a certificate.

Then you need to contact a company that deals with qualification confirmation and employment.

The next step will be additional training or direct employment through a confirmed qualification.

It is often better to go through the qualification procedure in parallel with language learning, which will save you time. The whole procedure can take from 6 months to 3 years. It all depends on your speed of language acquisition and the need for additional training.

Advantages of quick employment:

  • no need for additional studies
  • the opportunity to work seasonally
  • Disadvantages of quick employment:

Disadvantages of quick employment:

  • relatively low level of pay
  • small selection of vacancies
  • work outside the speciality
  • a lot of competition

Let's now take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of permanent employment in Germany.

Advantages of long-term employment:

  • work in your speciality
  • high salary level
  • integration and socialisation in Germany
  • low competition for specialists

Disadvantages of long-term employment:

  • long procedure
  • bureaucracy
  • the need for further education
  • need to pay for language courses, translations, documents and other services for qualification recognition
