Residence permits of refugees from Ukraine who received protection in Germany will continue to be valid until March 4, 2025. The Federal Ministry of the Interior and Public Affairs (BMI) provided for this through a legislative decree. The Federal Council recently approved this resolution. The basis for the further extension of
temporary protection is the decision of the EU member states at the end of September 2023.
Permits for Ukrainians in Germany will be automatically extended until 2025
Interestingly, refugees do not have to apply for an extension of their residence status and do not have to hold meetings with immigration authorities.
Residence permits will be renewed automatically. Automatic extension of stay status makes life easier for both victims and migration authorities. The one-time cost saving of the state administration amounts to about ten million euros.
What does the government say about the extension of visas for Ukrainians in Germany?
Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Feather commented on the decision as follows: “I am pleased that the Federal Council today approved our resolution. All those forced to flee Putin's deadly war will remain safe with us and have access to education and the job market. We have extended the term of the protection status
of refugees of Ukraine. Residence permits are automatically valid until March 4, 2025, without the need for refugees from Ukraine to visit the immigration service again.
We will continue to protect the lives of many people from Ukraine - as long as this terrible war continues. We continue to closely support Ukraine."
We will remind, about 1.1 million refugees from Ukraine currently live in Germany. About 350,000 of them are children and youth under the age of 18. About two-thirds of adult refugees are women.
This news is definitely positive, because it gives a little more time for adaptation and training for Ukrainians who plan to stay in Germany.
