Scholz: more Ukrainian refugees should be employed

If the federal government gets its way, more Ukrainian refugees will work in Germany and earn their own money in the future.

Several measures are currently being negotiated, including with the Federal Employment Agency. Three quarters of employment centers across the country are involved, there are 400 of them in total.

Most Ukrainians are currently completing language and integration courses in Germany. According to "BZ Die Stimme Berlins", the responsible federal ministry of labor says: "We have to engage their potential." That is, Ukrainians must eliminate

gaps in the labor market.

Currently, only 18 percent of Ukrainian refugees aged 18 to 64 are employed. This was determined by the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW). For comparison: in Great Britain this indicator is 50 percent, in Denmark - 53 percent, and in

the Netherlands - even 70 percent. This is evidenced results of a study by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.

About 687,000 people were recently registered with employment centers responsible for Ukrainian refugees, including about 480,000 working-age adults.

Refugees have enough social money

Possible reasons for the low rate: bureaucracy that makes it difficult to recognize professional qualifications, insufficient number of places on language courses, Ukrainians who hoped for a quick end to the war and therefore did not take up work, and Ukrainians who have enough social money.

"Social money is not an unconditional basic income. There is an obligation to cooperate. You should try to offer language courses together with work sooner and more often," said Martin Rosemann, SPD spokesman for labor market policy to job centers, to "BZ Die Stimme Berlins".

Reinhard Zager, president of the German district association, demands: "Refugees from Ukraine who come to Germany should no longer receive money from citizens directly. Instead, they must again receive benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act in the future."

Olaf Scholz's statement about Ukrainian refugees for 2024

It is also interesting that just recently, at the 6th Ukrainian-German Business Forum in Berlin, Olaf Scholz stated that Ukrainian refugees are definitely well educated and have already completed language courses, so German companies should hire them more actively. Even if they return back to Ukraine

after the end of the war, it will serve as a bridge between the EU and Ukraine, which is a country with high economic potential for EU cooperation.

This means that Ukrainian refugees, in the case of returning home, knowing the German language, have a chance to work for German corporations in the future, which will open their representative offices in Ukraine, as an EU member state.

The opinions of German politicians are somewhat different, but they are all unambiguous in terms of the need for employment. On the other hand, plans for employment of Ukrainians are a good sign that the stay of Ukrainian refugees in Germany will be extended. Especially those who are already employed.
