Do I need to exchange my Ukrainian driving licence in Germany?

The EU Council has decided to recognise Ukrainian driving licences in all EU countries. This applies to digital and physical licences.


Do I need to register Ukrainian cars in Germany?

Cars with Ukrainian registration are allowed to be used for up to one year. The time starts from the first day of entry into the country.

After a year of stay, the vehicle must be registered - thus, a car with foreign licence plates can be in Germany.


How much does it cost to register a car?

The cost depends on the federal state and can range from 31 to 100 euros.

Attention: Driving an unregistered vehicle in Germany is an administrative offence that entails fines. We recommend registering your car on time.


Who has to register a car in Germany and where?

A vehicle can be registered by its owner or a person for whom a power of attorney has been drawn up.

Cars are registered by the German state registration authority - Zulassungsbehörde. To complete the procedure, you need to prepare the following documents:

- an application form (a sample can be obtained locally);

- an identity document;

- proof of car insurance (motor third party liability insurance);

- vehicle valuation from an expert organisation (upon request).


Taxes for registered cars

In Germany, there is an annual vehicle tax, the amount of which depends on the engine size, year of manufacture and environmental friendliness. On average, this amount ranges from 200 to 500 euros.


Insurance for Ukrainian cars in Germany

You have two options for car insurance: "The Green Card and the Border Insurance Policy:


- The Green Card can be purchased in a few clicks here, even when you are already in Germany. This insurance policy will guarantee compensation in the event of a road traffic accident;

- A border insurance policy is sold when crossing the border with an EU country.


Remember that you should keep the insurance policy with you at all times and show it to the police whenever you are asked.
