What benefits are available to migrants in Germany?

The main source of social security regulation is the German Social Codex (Sozialgesetzbuch). The Codex consists of 12 chapters that regulate individual types of social security, so benefits are usually referred to by the chapter number in the Codex, for example, SGB-XI.

In addition, social legislation includes a number of additional laws on specific types of social assistance. According to these legal acts, the main types of social security are pensions, allowances, subsidies and compensations, to be more precise:

Financial support for young people (loans and scholarships for schoolchildren and students)

  • Subsidies for housing rent

  • Assistance and shelter for refugees

  • Allowances for the upbringing of children

  • Social assistance, basic assistance for the elderly

  • Assistance for the unemployed (job seekers) and their families

Do you get everything? So, what types of assistance can refugees apply for?

Friends, refugees can apply for all types of assistance!

1. If you have fled the war in Ukraine and are now a student or are planning to study at a German educational institution, then you can apply for a scholarship. For example, if your chosen form of study is Ausbildung, then you will receive an average scholarship of 700 euros per month.

2. If you have a part-time job, but you still do not have enough money to cover your rent, you can apply for Wohngeld, which is the name of the rent subsidy. Depending on the specific situation, you will be compensated for your rent in full or in part.

3. Let's look at refugee benefits in more detail.

The first thing you can get is shelter in a camp, food or accommodation with local residents. After registration, you will be able to register at the employment center, i.e. the Jobcenter, and receive cash benefits and a place in the tafel.

What benefits can you receive at the Jobcenter?

  • maintenance allowance

  • child allowances (not to be confused with family allowance)

  • payment for professional courses

  • subsidies and installments for housing improvement

4. Tafel is a social institution where you can get free food once a week or two.

Dear friends, please note that the employment center does not provide clothing or reimburse the cost of clothing and household items. All of this is included in the amount of your monthly allowance.

Also, the Labour Office usually does not pay for language courses, books or special study materials. Travel expenses are similar.

However, you can reimburse your travel expenses at the language school where you are attending the German language course. This is only if you have to take a bus or train to get to the school.

5. Parental allowance is paid by the Familienkasse. You need to apply for this allowance at the Bundesagentur für Arbeit.

6. And social assistance for disabled persons or persons of retirement age should be applied for at the Sozialamt.
