How to write a CV in Germany?

Those who speak German and write a good CV will have the best chance of getting a good job.

Rules are very important in Germany. A CV is no exception, and it must also be written according to the rules. Today, we will reveal all the secrets of how to format your CV correctly so that you are taken seriously.

General rules of formatting

Choose a white background for your CV and a colour to highlight the headings, for example, one of the shades of blue or another pleasant, neutral colour. Use the same font, it should be simple and easy to read. For example, Arial.

Photo

Be sure to include a photo of yourself taken no later than a year ago.

The photo should be a portrait, where your face and torso are clearly visible. A full-length photo is not required. Selfies are allowed, but not in the tradition of Instagram.

Pose. Pose directly for the camera with a light friendly smile, relaxed face.

Background. The best is a neutral background of a light wall without prints or paintings, or in a professional workplace and in uniform, for example, a cook in a tunic against the background of the kitchen. A photo with a beautiful city or nature background is also acceptable.

Light and time. Photos should be taken during the daytime only. A very good technique is to take a photo in front of a window, without direct sunlight. That is, you face the window in the light, but not sunny, time of day and take a selfie. The photos turn out great - experiment)

The photo is not suitable if it is:

  • In a sideways position, from the back, full-length from a distance, with other people or animals.
  • In the middle of a conversation, with pronounced facial expressions, such as bulging eyes and lips, hands raised in the air.
  • Very dark and blurry.
  • Too edited in a photo editor.

Hopefully, you've figured out the photo, now let's move on to the CV sections.

Resume sections

So, your CV must have a section about your professional skills in a list, without explaining the points.

A section on school and further education.

A section on professional experience. That is, where you worked, in what month and year it was, starting from the last job and ending with the first one.

Section on additional education. In this section, you can indicate courses and workshops, if any, that are relevant to the profession you are applying for.

Section with contact details. This section should contain information about where you currently live. It should also include your phone number, email address and links to professional social networks.

Section on hobbies and interests. This section is optional, but it will be good if you add it. The hobbies section will add personality to your CV.
